Lesson Learned: Moms (and Dads) DO Know Best

And by moms, I mean me.

As a new parent, you often question if what you are doing is right. By schedule or on demand? Pacifier or no? And on and on.

It’s been said by many Tumblr parents and I will say it again–there is no single right answer. Is the kid happy? Yes. Are you happy? Yes. Then you are probably doing it ‘right’.

Oh I know, this has been hashed and rehashed but I am adding my 2¢ with this example.

Kid Icarus usually eats around 6:00 or 7:00 p.m. And he usually falls asleep for the night around 9:00 or 10:00–sometimes after another feeding, sometimes not. Whether or not he eats in the 9-10:00 slot, I wake him to feed him around midnight ensuring he will sleep until it is time for me to get up for work in the morning.

This has been working. He’s happy. I’m happy. We all get decent sleep.

For reasons that no longer seem logical, I chose not to follow this routine last night and skipped the midnight feeding. This resulted in my husband and I waking up at 2:15 a.m. to a hungry, crying Kid Icarus.

If I was conflicted about whether or not waking him to feed him at midnight is a good idea–if I was unsure if this routine was working–I am no longer conflicted or unsure.

Tonight we will resume our regularly scheduled program (fates willing).

Moms, Dads, rest easier…you are probably doing it ‘right’.
