I Feel Like I'm Forgetting Something

Today, for the first time in over a year, I didn’t bring my breast pump to work.

I actually took it out to the car with me thinking that maybe I should bring it just in case - kind of like a security blanket.

But then I decided that was sentimental and silly.

I may be sentimental and silly by nature but the appeal of carrying one less piece of baggage in the car, on the train, and on my walk far outweighs sentimentality.

Still, I feel like this is a mommy milestone that is both bittersweet and liberating (as many Mumblers have expressed before).

106/365: Six mile run on the lakefront path with Jodi. Legs definitely haven’t completely recovered - we were slower than usual (my fault), but it still felt like an effort to me. Couldn’t waste this beautiful weather though!

I can’t express how much better I feel mentally after this gorgeously unseasonably warm run with my friend.
I miss the time with my family when I head out for these runs but I think they may be essential to my sanity.
Also, I was grateful for the more relaxed pace after a couple weeks of laziness.
Will I ever be back in shape?

Second First Birthday Party: The One for The Adults

We had a lot of people in our cozy home. A lot. And a lot of food. Too much food. But it was a lot of fun and we were happy to be surrounded by so much love and friendship.

We kept it informal with no agenda and (almost) no gifts so Kid Icarus didn’t have to be “on” for any part of the day. Well, except singing and cake-eating but he was well versed in those already.

Clearly the real point of this post is to make you drool over the cupcakes (from Swirlz) and to show you that I am just crazy enough to make party hats for plastic animals and spray paint popsicle sticks and wine bottles with chalk board paint.

First First Birthday Party: Just the Fam

It wasn’t really a party, we just had dinner and had some cake. There were a few gifts to open too (mostly books for our bookworm).

Kid Icarus loved loved loved when we sang Happy Birthday. The look on his face said “Oh this is amazing! Look at how they adore me!”

Also, this was over a month ago. Yeah, I know. But we’ve been busy around here.

A Good Morning

Most mornings I get up, shower and get ready before Kid Icarus wakes up. Speaking in terms of efficiency, this is ideal. However, it doesn’t allow us much time together before we rush out of the house.

This morning, Kid Icarus woke up full-on crying at the hour I normally drag myself out of bed. I thought he would be up for the day but he simply wanted to be held and to nurse before going back to sleep. We sat in the rocking chair, nursing, rocking, looking at each other, dozing a little. Occasionally, he would grab my hand and place it on his chest. It was a quiet and serene start to my morning. That sense of peacefulness has permeated my day.

Work days are full of bustle and corporate drama. But most days when I retreat to pump I take that time to clear my head and think about my family. Today it was effortless. My prenatal yoga instructor was right when she told our class that breastfeeding would give us time to slow down and just be with our soon-to-be-born babies. I wonder if she knew that would be true even at work.

For as much commotion as Kid Icarus has brought into our lives, he has also provided these moments of pure serenity and joy. I try to hold onto these moments, to make them last a little longer, to create a memory that will last forever. For I know they are fleeting and I know they are some of the moments that matter most.

We are currently in a slow process of weaning. Soon Kid Icarus and I won’t have these moments together. Just writing those words brings tears to my eyes. I hope we can find new moments together that allow us that quiet connection, even if they are less frequent.

I hope we always find a way to quietly bask in the love of our little family.
